The Chief Magistrates Court in Kitgum has remanded five suspects arrested for failure to extinguish a fire they reportedly set up during a violent land wrangle in Mucwini Sub County.

The fire destroyed four teachers’ houses in Lagot Alima Primary School and 7 other grass thatched huts in the home of Odida Mathew, a member of the same village.

The suspects were identified as 75-year-old Loum Daramoi Omona, 58-year-old Jackson Oringa, and Justine Okello who is 65 years. Others are 54 year old Okot Maiciano and Anywar Alex aged 21. They are members of Pajong clan that fought running battles with the Bura clan members over the ownership of a two-hectare piece of land at the beginning of February 2014.

The suspects are residents of Lagot Alima village in Pagwok Parish in Mucwini Sub County. They were arrested on Monday during a security meeting convened by the Resident District Commissioner Captain Okot Santos Lapolo.

Denis Ochama, the District Police Commander, says the charge sheet might still be amended to accommodate charges of conspiracy to commit crimes, causing bodily harm and arson since 10 people were injured during the violence as well.

Charles Emuria, the Kitgum district Chief Magistrate charged the suspects for the offence and remanded them to Kitgum government Prison until March 25th when their case comes up for mention again.

Okello Patrick Lumumba, the Police officer in charge of Crime Intelligence and Investigation says the arrest brings to 8 the number of suspects remanded at Kitgum government prison over the same offence. Earlier three people were remanded till March 5th.  He explains to Uganda Radio Network that more suspects are still at large and that the charge of failure to extinguish fire is different from arson.
