6 Nursing School Students Arrested Over Violent Strike

Six students of Uganda Christian Institute and Nursing School in Lira town have been arrested by the police over a violent strike.

 

The students that were picked from their dormitories on the orders of school authority on Tuesday evening are being held at Lira Central Police Station.

 

Those being held in police custody include Benard Otema, Steven Opus, Andrew Olal, Benard Woling, Steven Opolot and Augustine Okot. All are nursing students.

 

Manshur Suwed, North Kyoga regional police spokesman, says the students will be charged with malicious damage and threatening violence.

 

Manshur says four students are at large adding that the students have been causing havoc in the school for about two weeks ago.

He says the students complained that the school nursing section is not registered. He adds that the nursing section is being registered by the Ministry of Education.

 

Boniface Okello Alele, the director of the school, says the students had already become nuisance to the learning facility.

 

Okello says whenever it come to meal time the students would come, stop everybody and refuse to follow line before serving themselves food.

 

He says whenever the students were told to stop they would always threaten to mobilize for a violent strike and beat up the school authority.

 

They are expected to appear before the court to answer two charges as soon as their file has been sanctioned by the resident state attorney. This was the first time students at this institute are plotting for a violent.

The school is has 800 students. The nursing section of the school has 120 students.
