Six police officers attached to Kamwenge police station in Kamwenge district are behind bars at the Rwenzori regional police headquarters in Fort Portal on allegations of murder.

The regional police spokesperson Bakar Muga says the officers were arrested on Wednesday from Kamwenge following allegations that they participated in the murder of 24-year-old Gideon Agaba commonly known as Ofwono.

Muga says there are allegations that on the night of November 15, while at Mubushenyi cell in Kamwenge town council, the police officers shot Agaba dead under unknown circumstances.

He says the regional professional standards unit—PSU is investigating circumstances under which the officers who are supposed to keep law and order could have shot a civilian.

He says that it is not clear whether they had gone to execute an arrest or not. He however declined to reveal the suspects' names saying it might jeopardise investigations.

This is not the first time allegations of shooting are put against police officers in the region. A few months ago, the residents of Butsumbamuro village in Kasese Municipality alleged that a police officer shot and killed a civilian while evicting people from a disputed piece of land. Police dismissed the claim and there were no investigations into the matter. END
