Police in Namayingo district has arrested 66 year old George Omondi over mobilizing a mob to kill his brother, James Bwiire who is aged 42 years.

Omondi was arrested while attempting to flee from the country to  neighboring Kenya, through the Busia boarder on Thursday.

Bwiire has been a prominent businessman dealing in plastics and women clothing, in the five districts of Namayingo, Busia, Bugiri, Mbale and Jinja.

Omondi is said to have stormed Bwiire’s home located in Bumechi village, in Mutumba sub county, in Namayingo district on Wednesday evening and accused him of enriching himself with the aid of evil spirits.

It is reported that, Omondi mobilized a group of about 60 youths who stoned Bwiire to death, accusing him of being a member of the imaginary “illumanati,” spiritualist group, which was allegedly aiding him to amass wealth, as the rest of the community members languished in poverty.

Bwiire locked himself inside his house however, the angry mob set it ablaze and as he attempted to escape the glaring fire, they pelted him with stones until he breathed his last.

Damalie Nakyesa, a resident within the area says that Omondi has been peddling ritualistic theories against his brother and often accused him of acquiring wealth through human sacrifice.

“Bwiire has been the richest amongst all his eight brothers and he even labored to sponsor their children’s education," she says. "But although the rest are not jealous, Omondi, who’s the oldest of them all, continued to hold village meetings, with an aim of rallying community members to revolt against his young brother’s alleged evil ways of acquiring wealth."

Police says Omondi has confessed to his crimes and agreed to cooperate with security operatives, so as to arrest other suspects still at large.

Busoga East’s police spokesperson, James Mubi says that, the suspect is being detained at Namayingo central police station and he will face two counts of murder and malicious damage.

Mubi adds that, Bwiire’s body has been taken to Buyinja healh center IV mortuary awaiting postmortem.
