At least 70 senior four candidates at Cleverland High School in Mbarara Municipality have been sent home due to indiscipline.

The students turned rowdy on Monday night and smashed electricity bulbs in their dormitories, while protesting the suspension of 14 of their colleagues by the school administration last Friday.

Johnson Tukehayo, the school director says the 14 students on Thursday night escaped from school to the nearby Mukidongo trading centre, where they drank people’s booze without paying for it.

The local residents rang police that rushed to the area and arrested four of the candidates while the rest escaped back to school.

Tukehayo says following the incident, the school administration sent the ring leaders home to avoid further chaos at the school.

But on Monday night, the students turned rowdy and asked the school administration to cancel the suspension of their colleagues. They argued that the suspended candidates are going to miss classes just two weeks before starting their final exams.

The administration insists that keeping indisciplined students at school is likely to result into more chaotic scenes at school.

Edward Mbabazi, the Mbarara district education officer, says he has not yet been briefed officially on the matter but confirms having received the news about the student’s strike and suspension.

He says his office is waiting for the official communication from the school before he intervenes.

Cleverland School is privately owned with a population of 800 students.

The incident adds to the long list of strikes in secondary schools in the country. In June this year, all 685 students of St. Joseph’s College Ombaci in Arua district were suspended and the school closed for a week after they staged a strike. The strike was followed a week later by another one at Adumi Secondary School in the same district. Seventeen students were suspended.

Similar strikes were staged in Mbarara Alliance School in Mbarara in which 34 students were expelled, and St Gonzaga Secondary School in Lyantonde, where 55 students were suspended. Other strikes were staged at Seke School in Lwengo district among others.
