At least seventy-seven suspected hard-core criminals, who have been terrorizing motorists and pedestrians on the Northern Bypass, are currently detained at various police stations.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke reported that these suspects were apprehended during a joint intelligence-led operation conducted over the weekend in multiple locations, including Mulimira Zone, Busega, Kireka, and Bweyogerere. The operation was a collaborative effort between the police and the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF).

During the operation in Mulimira Zone, 22 notorious criminals with outstanding cases at various police stations under the Kira-Road Division Police were apprehended. Additionally, 26 suspected criminals were arrested along the Busega stretch of the Northern Bypass. The Busega operation was prompted by growing public concerns about phone snatching and thefts in the area, particularly around the flyovers on the Northern Bypass.

Rusoke explained that the operation was extended to cover areas such as Kyengera and parts of Mityana Road in response to the rising crime trend. Six motorcycles were also recovered and are currently being held as evidence at the Natete Police Station.

Meanwhile, Muwonge Jamid, a resident of Nansana and a victim of a recent night robbery at the Namungoona flyover, described how the gang of criminals, who often hide in trenches, target unsuspecting victims stuck in traffic jams.

An additional 29 suspected criminals were apprehended during operations in Kireka and Bweyogerere over the weekend. These individuals are known offenders who have been wreaking havoc on users of the Northern Bypass, perpetrating attacks and causing chaos.

“We want to commend our officers, the local council authorities who provided information, and our colleagues from UPDF, who have helped us in these operations. This shows that when we work with communities, a lot can be done,” Kituuma said.

He added that the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and is likely to lead to the arrest of more criminals and the restoration of order.

The recent report from the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) revealed that the increasing criminal activities were being orchestrated by ex-convicts, who are reverting to their old habits and continuing their criminal activities immediately after serving short sentences.
