A 9-year-old boy is battling for his life at Busia Hospital after he was beaten into comma by her mother for stealing shillings 500 to buy pan cakes at school. The boy, whose identity has been withheld because he is a minor, was rushed to hospital on Saturday in critical condition.

Police explains that the 9-year-old was beaten into comma by her mother Sarah Gimbo, accusing him of stealing shillings 500. Bob Kagarura, Busia District Police commander says that accuses Gimbo of using excessive force on the minor. He says that the boy also sustained severe bruises as a result of beatings.

Kagarura says that Gimbo will be arraigned in court for causing bodily harm to the minor once investigations are complete. Child abuse is one of the most rampant crimes reported in eastern Uganda. In 2010, 6242 children were tortured in Eastern Uganda by their parents, guardians and other members of their family.

Despite this, statistics from the police child protection unit showed a decline in child abuse between Jan and June 2010. This was attributed to the involvement of community leaders to fight off the vice.
