The Bible Society of Uganda has collected over one billion shillings from the ongoing handwritten bible project. Under the project, which started in November 2017, each participant is allowed to write a single verse of the English Standard Version Bible at 100,000 Shillings.

More than 1,000 Ugandans have so far embraced the project which aims at collecting 3.1 billion Shillings. The money will go towards the construction of the new Bible House. The youngest of the writers is aged four while the eldest is aged 101.

The Bible Society of Uganda Secretary General, Simon Peter Mukhama says the handwritten bible will be a special commemorative edition to be unveiled during celebrations to mark 50 years of Bible Society of Uganda in November 2018. This will be the first handwritten bible to be published in Africa.

Mukhama says they are about to complete writing of the New Testament although some people preferred to write verses in the Old Testament.

The Archbishop of Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali, Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda Michael Blume, Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala, and Chief Justice Bart Katureebe feature on the list of those who have participated in the project. Mukhama says names of persons who will participate in the project will feature on the back pages of the bible.

Mukhama says about 2,000 more Ugandans still have an opportunity to write a verse in the handwritten Bible, expected to be wrapped up by end of May. He says the total cash that has been received is about 200 million Shilling out of one billion because some Churches have not paid.

Mukhama made the remarks while interacting with journalists on the sideline of Bible Society of Uganda General Assembly today at Patidar Samaj event venue, opposite Buganda Road Primary School in Kampala.
