Vendors in Abayita Ababiri market in Katabi town council, Wakiso district have asked authorities to clear the huge heaps of uncollected garbage in the area.

The market housing 192 vendors is situated along the Entebbe Kampala highway, has no garbage pits. Garbage is scattered in different parts of the market.

The vendors say that the huge heaps of rubbish not only produce a foul smell but also threaten the hygiene of the market and those who use it.

The market is occasionally cleaned by volunteers such as the Uganda Red Cross Society, primary, secondary school children and soldiers during community work.

Ibrahim Ssemakula, the Chairperson of the market vendors' association says that the council authorities have not collected the garbage for more than a month.

Ronald Kalema, the Katabi town council chairperson, says that although the council is mandated to collect garbage from the market, the vendors too need to be responsible enough to look out for methods of working in a clean environment.

Kalema added that the garbage in the market is mostly caused by people who sell food outside the market which he says is illegal.
