Leaders of Abim District are bickering over a tractor given to the
district by the central government in 2016.
The tractor has since gone missing from the district yard raising
concerns from a section of the councillors.
It was donated to the district under Local Economic Development,
LED to help the farmers engage in commercial farming by opening big farms for
economic benefit.
Patrick Omach, the councillor for Magamaga Sub County alleges that
Jimmy Ogwang Olum used his powers while he was the Secretary for Production and
Marketing to illegally remove the tractor from the district yard and use it for
personal gains.
Omach says the disappearance of the tractor has undermined the
efforts of the Abim district from helping the local farmers implement commercial
production as envisaged by Uganda Vision 2040.
He has tasked the police in Abim to investigate the matter.
//Cue in I wants the tractor ...
Cue out: prosecuting him.”//.
However, Olum denies any involvement in the disappearance of the
tractor. He noted that DEC decided to hire out the tractor to an investor to
generate revenue.
Ogwang says that the investor, however, failed to manage the
tractor and has been grounded since 2017.
The Abim Resident District Commissioner, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka says he has
directed the police to investigate the disappearance of the tractor.
He said several farmer groups and individuals had paid money to the district to
use the tractor.
