Accident Victim Drags NRM Publicity Secretary to Court

Edison Turyahabwa, the Publicity Secretary of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party in Kabale, is on the spot for allegedly failing to compensate an accident victim.

Turyahabwa, who was driving a Toyota Ipsum registration number UAL 268P, allegedly knocked and injured a 54-year-old woman, Regina Bingana, a resident of Rwankuba village in Kabale District. The incident occurred on May 5, 2017, along Kabanyonyi-Kafunjo road.

Bingana reportedly sustained a leg and thigh fracture as a result of the accident. She was rushed to Kabale Hospital and later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital for advanced treatment.

She reported the matter to Kabale Central Police Station under file number TAR 55/2017.  But the parties were advised to settle the matter out of court and on May 20, 2017, Turyahabwa committed to paying a sum of 2.35 million Shilling in compensation for the injuries that Bingana sustained.

He paid only 150,000 Shillings and promised to clear the balance in installments before July 09, 2017. However, Turyahabwa never paid the balance.

Now, Bingana has instituted a claim under the Small Claims Procedure in Kabale Court seeking redress for the injuries and anguish she has been subjected to as a result of the accident. The small claims.

According to the Small claims demand notice number 45 of 2019 dated January 24, 2019, Turyahabwa is required to have settled the debt within 14 days. Bingana says she is now stuck with a huge hospital bill, yet she is unable to walk and to work.
