Police Hunt Agago Councilor for Murder

Police in Agago District are searching for Robert Ocaka, the Area Councilor III for Latin Ling Parish, accused of causing the death of Paul Okidi, 35, following a bar fight. 

The fight took place on December 22, 2024, at a bar in Nam village, Latin Ling.

Witnesses state that Ocaka became irritated when Okidi sat near him, which led to a heated argument and physical confrontation. The next morning, Okidi complained of severe chest pains, and Ocaka took him to a clinic in Patongo Town Council. Despite treatment, Okidi's condition worsened, and he passed away on January 4, 2025.

After Okidi's burial on January 7, Ocaka sought a cultural resolution through clan leaders, but Okidi’s relatives rejected this and reported the case to Agago Central Police Station on January 11. Police launched an investigation, registering a case of murder by assault.

Aswa East Regional Police Spokesperson, Inspector of Police Joe Oloya, confirmed statements from Okidi’s relatives have been recorded, and the crime scene was inspected. A court order to exhume Okidi’s body for further examination is pending.Meanwhile, Ocaka remains at large.

IP Oloya urged the public to assist law enforcement in locating the suspect, stressing the limitations of cultural settlements in cases involving serious crimes. 

Police reassured the public of their commitment to bringing Ocaka to justice, urging calm as investigations proceed. In 2023, 1,142 cases of murder due to assault were reported to police, showing a 5.2% increase from 2022. Aswa Region recorded 91 of these cases.
