Agriculture Budget increases by 65 Percent

While presenting the 2016/2017 financial budget at Serena Conference Center this afternoon, Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija, said the Agricultural sector requires total overhaul and reorganisation, which will focus on reforming land ownership, input delivery, extension services provisions, irrigation financing and marketing in order to commercialise Agriculture.

Government of Uganda has increased funding to the Agriculture sector by 65 percent from Shillings 343 Billion last financial year to Shillings 823 Billion this financial year.

 

While presenting the 2016/2017 financial budget at Serena Conference Center this afternoon, Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija, said the Agricultural sector requires total overhaul and reorganisation, which will focus on reforming land ownership, input delivery, extension services provisions, irrigation financing and marketing in order to commercialise Agriculture.

He says Government will establish an Agricultural Insurance scheme to minimize risks and also develop and implement a comprehensive national agriculture finance policy and strategy to support private sector investment in agriculture.

He says Government will facilitate mechanization, appropriate technologies, increased storage and market access among others. Matia adds that specifically Government will provide improved breeding, planting materials, pesticides, increased disease surveillance, enforcement of animal laws and regulations at both central and Local Government levels.

He adds that Government will conduct Agricultural research and development, construction of irrigation infrastructure for community and an increase in water storage.
