A team of police officers and Uganda people's defense forces-UPDF personnel led by the Kiira region police commander, Dauda Hiriga have on Sunday evening arrested Forum for Democratic Change-FDC presidential candidate, Patrick Amuriat.

Police also fired teargas to disperse his supporters who converged in the middle of the road in an attempt to create a procession and block security personnel from arresting their candidate.

Amuriat was meant to campaign in the districts of Jinja and Kamuli but was arrested on his way to his day's last campaign rally which had been organised at the Jinja district headquarters.

He began his campaigns peacefully in Kamuli district where he paid tribute to the fallen Kamuli municipality legislator, Rehema Watongola before holding mini rallies in the town councils of Namwendwa, Kitayundwa and Kamuli municipality.

However, Amuriat who was accessing Jinja district through Kamuli route met resistance from security personnel in Buwolelo trading center and after minutes of verbal exchange, he was arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.

Abubaker Maganda, the FDC chairperson in Jinja district says that police had approved their campaign program but was surprised that his candidate was arrested instead.

"The same security personnel who approved our campaign program yesterday evening didn't listen to our explanation but instead arrested the candidate in a humiliating manner," he said.

Hiriga says that they are implementing the new electoral commission covid-19 guidelines aimed at blocking physical campaigns in Corona virus high risk districts like Jinja but declined to divulge further details.
