Another Suspect Dies in Police Cells

Marshal Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, says that Twijukye was found dead in the cells at Bushenyi central police station on Tuesday morning.

Bushenyi police are investigating the death of a suspect in custody. The deceased is 26-year-old Anthony Twijukye, a resident Karama village in Ruhumuro Sub County in Bushenyi district.  

He was arrested together with Alex Tumwebaze over the weekend for alleged animal theft over the weekend. However, Marshal Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, says that Twijukye was found dead in the cells at Bushenyi central police station on Tuesday morning. 

He says that they have applied for orders from Bushenyi Chief Magistrate’s court to conduct an inquest to establish the circumstances surrounding the deceased’s death.

A police officer who spoke to URN on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media that the deceased complained of breathing difficulties around 4:00 in the morning shortly before passing on. 

Twijukye’s death brings to three, the number of suspects who had died in police cells within six days. Last week, two suspects died in police custody in Masaka region, hours after their arrest.
