UPDF has shot dead a suspected warrior in a running battle with rustlers following a botched cattle raid. The an unidentified warrior was shot on Tuesday evening at Acerer grazing area, about 90kms from Moroto town as rustlers were trying to escape back to their settlement.

The army also recovered his gun. This brings to two, the number of suspected rustlers killed by the army following an attempted cattle raid in Amudat district this week. On Monday, at least 100 raiders from Pian County in Nakapiripirit and Matheniko in Moroto stormed Amudat district to grab animals.

One rustler was shot dean and a UPDF soldier injured a serious gun fire exchange between UPDF and the rustlers. The UPDF officer is currently undergoing treatment at Matany Hospital in Napak district. Nahaman Ojwee, Moroto RDC says the rustlers are still scattered and trying to find their way back home in Nadunget Sub County.

He says so far the forces have not recovered some of the animals the rustlers successfully snatched from the herdsmen. Ojwee cautions the parents to desist from raiding animals from their kinsmen saying they are hunting for death. He adds that about 40 rustlers recently crossed into Kenya and none of them survived.

Capt. Eddie Natukunda, the acting UPDF 3rd Division spokesperson tells URN that the operation is ongoing and the army is determined to recover the guns used in the botched raid on Monday. He describes rustling as vice that will not allow Karamoja to develop. Natukunda appeals to local leaders to liaise with kraal heads to convene meetings to try and address the escalating raids.
