Residents of Rwahi trading Center in Kayonza Sub County, Ntungamo district are living in fear of disease outbreak due to the appalling sanitation.

They accuse authorities of failing to open up drainage channels and clearing decomposing piles of garbage in the trading center.

Known to many as the home of onions, Rwahi is trading point for thousands of traders from Kampala, Tanzania, Rwanda and south Sudan. It is also a popular stop over for travelers plying the Mbarara- Kabale highway. But the area is characterized by heaps of garbage, clogged drainage channels and a stench from rotting onion leaves.

The most affected areas include roadsides and corridors along Rwahi-Rwashamaire road, Nyamiyaga-Nyakasa road, Mbarara-Kabale Highway, Rukukuru road among others.

Crispus Mugisha, a fresh onions vendor at the trading centre says that garbage is littered irresponsibly in the area, a problem compounded by the absence of toilet facilities.

Elly Niwandinda, the Kayonza sub county health assistant told our reporter that the situation is worrying yet the sub county has no funds to collect garbage accumulating from various activities.

Nicholas Asiimwe Mwamba, the Kayonza Sub County chairperson told our reporter that the biggest challenge for the trading centre is congestion. The trading center attracts close to 10000 people during the day on a daily basis.

He however adds says that they have now embarked on a drive to open new roads from the center.
