Applicants for Position of Bishop of Proposed Ruwenzori West Diocese Have Up to May to Express Interest

Interested applicants for the position of Bishop for the proposed West Ruwenzori diocese have up to May 2023 to express interest. The church of Uganda guidelines requires that interested applicants are given seven months to express interest and present their credentials for consideration.

Rev. Rueben Kisembo, the Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese told URN that so far three people have submitted their documents including academic transcripts, testimonies, and curriculum vitae to the diocesan chancellor for scrutiny.

Bishop Kisembo added that once the applicants have submitted their names, the assembly will then communicate to the synod of Ruwenzori diocese to invite the nomination committee to make a search and propose two candidates to the House of Bishops for the elections.

Bishop Kisembo noted that they are currently mobilizing Christians to offer more resources toward meeting all the necessary requirements for the new diocese to kick off. 

He said that they are yet to put in place many of the requirements including the required Shillings100 million startup for the diocese.

He also asked the community to accept any bishop who will be elected and avoid any tribal or ethnic sentiments that would deter the progress of the new diocese.

Bishop Kisembo, who was in Bundibugyo district to oversee the progress of the work for the proposed diocese that they will ask for an adjustment in the requirements when the House of Bishops meets on January 17th and 18, 2023.  In 2017, renegade Christians in Bundibugyo District requested to break away from Ruwenzori Diocese and demanded the transfer of Canon Jonathan Kyangasha, who had been appointed Archdeacon of Bumadu.

The Church of Uganda Synod agreed to the creation of the Diocese and asked the authorities to construct staff houses, the Bishop's house, and appoint qualified staff. Bumadu Archdeaconry will be the headquarters of the new Diocese, which will comprise three archdeaconries, 21 parishes, and 163 churches with a population of over 165,000 Christians.
