Armed thugs have waylaid a Kalita Bus registration number UAS 739 J and robbed passengers of their property worth millions of shillings.  The gunmen intercepted the bus in the wee hours of Monday morning at Kigalama swamp, about sixty Kilometers along the Kampala-Mubende highway.

Henry Kintu, the Mityana District Police Commander says that after intercepting the bus the gunmen diverted it from the main road to the forest. He says that the gunmen beat up the 53 passengers on board while ordering them to undress before they robbed them of their money and merchandise. Most of the passengers aboard the Kampala bound bus were traders from Zaire and Kasese.

According to Kintu, by the time police arrived at the crime scene the robbers had already left.

Kintu warned travelers against carrying huge sums of money, but instead use the available money transfer services like mobile money to avoid huge loses. Nsubuga Easyman, the driver of the ill fated busy says the robber hijacked a lorry that they used to block the road at Kigalama swamp.

Joram Kanyike, one of the passengers says that he had about three million shilling that he raised after selling his merchandise in Kasese district. He says that the robbers took all the money leaving with him with nothing.  The passengers have recorded statements at Mityana police station about the incident.
