The army has denied there is a rebel group in Soroti.
There have been local media reports in Soroti of an alleged presence of an unidentified armed rebel groups on the shores of Lake Kyoga.
The reports first emerged on Tuesday after armed men were seen loitering in Bugondo Sub-county during daytime.
According to the locals, the gunmen were moving in groups of three. Bugondo Sub-county is located on the shores of Lake Kyoga and borders Kamuli to the West and Kaberamaido to the north.
Julius Odeng, the Bugondo LC3 Chairperson says the gunmen who were seen in Apapai on Tuesday afternoon forced some villagers to flee their homes. He says the locals yesterday mobilized themselves and arrested a man who is believed to be one of the gunmen.
Odeng says the suspect who has since been handed over to the army pretended to be a Lunatic. He however says the group could be a gang of thugs whose intention is to cause fear among the resident to create a situation where they can steal property.
Lt. Caesar Olweny, the Third Division Army Spokesperson, says the investigations by the army indicate that the armed men sighted in Soroti are armed thugs and not rebels.
Olweny claims that it is the thugs and their collaborators who are spreading rumors on the presence of a rebel group in Soroti.
