The Army in Gulu district is investigating a resident of Nwoya district for gun trafficking.

Police handed Patrick Ayella, 42, a resident of latek odong village, in Panokrac Parish in Nwoya district to the military after he was found in possession of a submachine gun loaded with 35 rounds of ammunition from Gulu Bus Park on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson says Ayella was arrested on a tip-off by residents. He says the suspect had the weapon alongside other dangerous items he concealed in a bag.

Okema says Ayella told Police he uses the gun for hunting wildlife in Murchison Falls Conservation Area. He says they want the Army to investigate Ayella following rumours of rebel recruitment in Nwoya district.

It is the third weapon recovered in Gulu since the beginning of March. Two weeks ago, two people were arrested trying to traffic AK47 rifles to Kampala.
