A former Arrow Boys commander has been arrested by Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers from his home in Arusi village in Arapai sub-county, Soroti district.

Richard Odongo (40) was arrested by the soldiers on Thursday.

Major Joseph Okoboi, the overall intelligence officer and commander of Operation Restore Hope in Teso sub-region, claims that Odongo was arrested by UPDF because he is army deserter who was causing insecurity in the area.

Okoboi says Odongo was in the 69th UPDF battalion but allegedly deserted the army in May 2002.

However, the former Amuria LC 5 chairperson and current chair of Teso Opposition Forum, Julius Ochen condemns the arrest.

He accuses the army of trying to scare the Arrow Boys. He explains that the former Arrow Boys militia led by Odongo have been demanding for compensation from government for helping to fight the Lord's Resistance Army rebels led by Joseph Kony.

Ochen says the Arrow Boys are protesting over unfulfilled pledges from the army and the government.

The Arrow Boys militia force was formed in 2003 as an auxiliary force to boost the UPDF efforts to fight the LRA rebels who had begun incursions into Eastern Uganda.
