Arua CID Officer in Trouble Over Bribe

A criminal Investigations officer in Arua has been arrested for alleged bribery.

Emmanuel Mbonimpa, was arrested on Saturday on the orders of Patrick Otika the regional police commander, following a tip that a suspect had disappeared from police cells under mysterious circumstances.

Samunga Emmu, a Congolese suspect was arrested in Nebbi on April 10th by operatives from Rapid Response Unit (RRU).

He is wanted in connection with car thefts in Uganda and Congo. The CID officer currently out on police bond, is alleged to have received a 1500-dollar bribe to release the suspect.

Henry Alyang, the West Nile region police Spokesman, says Mbonimpa is being detained to pave way for investigations into the alleged bribe and disappearance of the suspect.

Preliminary investigations show that Samunga escaped on April 21st. his disappearance was noticed during a parade. When asked about his whereabouts, the police cell guards said that the CID officer had called the suspect out of the cell and that he never returned.

Mbonimpa however denies any involvement in wrongdoing. He denies any knowledge about the suspect and the alleged money.

Mbonimpa, was this morning found writing a report to the regional police commander, explaining the circumstances under which the suspect went missing.
