At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a fatal accident along Arua-Nebbi road on Friday.

Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson for West Nile, identified one of the deceased as Florence Driwaru, the district councilor representing Offaka and Okollo sub counties to Arua district council. She says the other victim a pedestrian who was knocked by the same vehicle has not yet been identified since he had no identification by the time of the accident.

Angelo Babua, a resident of Anyava village who witnessed the incident says the accident happened after a pick up attempted to avoid hitting a speeding motorcyclist.  The driver ended up knocking down the pedestrian who died at the scene.

Florence Driwaru was in the co-driver's seat of the pick up. The witness says upon impact, Driwaru was thrown through the windscreen of the vehicle and ran over.

Angucia says Driwaru's life could have been saved if she had been wearing a seat belt. She attributes the accident to overspeeding and reckless driving.

The driver of the pick up is on the run and has not been identified either.

Gensis Acema, the district speaker, blames the police and the driver for allowing a vehicle in dangerous mechanical condition onto the road.

This was the second accident that Friday. The first involved a Nile coach Bus where at least five people were seriously injured and several others sustained minor injury at Agwok along Pakwach-Karuma highway.
