Students at Bishop Barham University College Kabale, a Constituent College of Uganda Christian University are demanding for the re-installation of a community hour assemblies at the campus.

A community hour assembly at the university used to occur every Thursday of the week from 10:45am- 12:55pm. The community hour was a platform for students to directly interact with the administration on issues affecting them and the smooth running of the University.

However, the platform was scrapped off in January this year on orders of Reverend Dr. Medard Rugyendo, the University Principal.

Students say that ever since it was scraped off, it became a very big problem for them to express their concerns to the administration.

Ezra Abaasa, one of the concerned student says that when community hour was still at the University, it was very easy for the students to express their concerns to the administration and they would be addressed in time,

Abaasa says that after it was scrapped off, students have never got a chance to forward issues affecting them to the administration. He says that the administration should be considerate and re-install the community hour.

Cue out: …the principal.”//

Saul Namanya, another concerned student says that the scrapping off of community hour was a big disappointment to the students. Namanya wonders why the hour was scrapped off without any reason.

He suspects that the university administration was forced to scrap it off after they got tired of being continuously being held accountable by the students.

//Cue in: “it was really…

Cue out: …they can.”//

Innocent Atukunda, another student says that the decision by the University administration to scrap off community hour is a sign of dictatorship. He says that the removal of the hour has affected effective information flow between the students and the administration.

//Cue in: “community hour being…

Cue out: …ever absent.”//

Reverend Dr. Medard Rugyendo, the University Principal says there is no reason for students to complain for a community hour yet other bodies like the guild council, dean of students and head of departments that connect them with the administration are very active.
