Besigye Charged with Treason, Remanded at Moroto Prison

Former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has been charged with treason and remanded at Moroto central government Prison.

Dr Besigye who has been in detention since Wednesday was rushed to court late Friday evening. He was presented before Moroto Chief Magistrate, Charles Yeteise where he was charged with treason and later remanded. He is expected to appear back in court on May 25. 

Prosecution led by Moroto Resident State Attorney Gerald Amalo alleges that Besigye while in Kampala declared himself and took an oath as President of the Republic of Uganda contrary to the outcome of the February 18, presidential election.

Sources says at Moroto Central Police says Besigye has not recorded any statement at Moroto Central Police  where he had been station since Wednesday.

Dr. Besigye was arrested on Wednesday May 11 after beating the heavy deployment and surveillance at his home in Kasangati, Wakiso district and unexpectedly emerged in Kampala's central business district. He was then airlifted to Moroto in a helicopter that landed at Nadunget Airstrip before he was driven to Moroto police station under tight security.

Early today, Moroto Central Police Station was surrounded by counter terrorism officers, Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces –UPDF officers, military intelligence personnel and anti-riot police among others.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says an investigation team is assembling evidence in relation to disobedience of an interim court order that had barred Besigye and members of Forum for Democratic Change –FDC party from holding activities under the defiance campaign.

Through his campaign, Besigye is contesting the outcome of the February 18 presidential elections in which he emerged runner-up.

Results by the Electoral Commission gave Yoweri Museveni, the National Resistance Movement –NRM party candidate a win over seven other contenders.
