Yona Mwesigwa Katonene, the embattled Bishop of West Ankole diocese is blaming his woes on witch hunt by some individuals in Sheema district he accuses of inciting Christians to revolt against him. The revelation by the Bishop comes hardly a week after he was dragged to Mbarara High court by a group of Christians for alleged financial impropriety and his involvement in the affairs of Ankole Western University Project.

Led by Sam Kahinda and Yowasi Makaru, the former Bushenyi LC 5 chairperson the petitioners are opposed to the decision by West Ankole diocese to open branches for the university in other areas saying it is premature. In April 2014, a section of Christians in Sheema district blocked the Bishop from accessing several churches where he was scheduled to confirm hundreds of children.

Christians pelted the Bishop’s entourage with stones at three churches, where he attempted to gain forceful entry prompting police to intervene. Bishop Katonene describes the incidents as “individually motivated by a few elite Banyankore who have personal grudges against him. Katonene says “it’s so unfortunate that these individuals are using the University issue to confuse the God’s people to revolt against him.

Kahinda told URN on phone on Monday morning that he doesn't hate the Bishop personally but he wants transparency in his leadership. Kahinda says they are not going to back off their fight adding that they are only going to communicate with the Bishop in a language he understands most, which is court.
