Boat Accident Claims 12 Lives on Lake Albert

The boat which had 18 passengers travelling from Ndaiga Landing Site to the Democratic Republic of Congo capsized near Kamina Landing site in Ndaiga Sub County at around 7 a.m. on Monday. Six of the passengers were rescued alive.

Twelve people are feared dead in a boat accident on the Lake Albert in Kagadi district. 

The boat which had 18 passengers travelling from Ndaiga Landing Site to the Democratic Republic of Congo capsized near Kamina Landing site in Ndaiga Sub County at around 7 a.m. on Monday. Six of the passengers were rescued alive. 

Albertine region police spokesperson Julius Hakiza told Uganda Radio Network that the small canoe that was overloaded with passengers and fish was hit by a strong wind. He says both the police and Uganda Peoples Defense Forces-UPDF marine experts have commenced the search for the bodies. 

By press time the identities of the survivors and the missing persons could not readily be established.

In May this year, a boat carrying 50 footballers and fans capsized near Fofo landing site in Buseruka Sub County, Hoima district killing 16 people.  The boat which was carrying Players and Fans of Fofo Football Club for a friendly match at Runga Landing Site capsized a few meters after setting off.
