The body of a Ugandan fisherman who drowned in Lake Albert during a scuffle with suspected Congolese Militiamen has been retrieved. The body was retrieved around 10am on Thursday morning by fishermen attached to Kijangi landing site in Buseruka Sub County in Hoima district.

The deceased fisherman only identified as Onen, was attached to Kijangi landing site in Hoima district. He allegedly drowned together with a suspected Congolese militiaman who together with others tried to rob them of their fishing gear on Sunday night.

Trouble started when armed Congolese Militiamen approached a boat, which Onen and his colleagues were using and ordered them to surrender their fishing gear to them. The fishermen declined the orders leading to a scuffle with the Congolese militiamen. It is in the process that Onen grabbed one of the attackers and dived with him in the lake.

The gun the Congolese militiaman was holding also fell in the lake. The other militiamen reportedly crossed back to DR Congo after the incident. Since then, fishermen attached to Kijangi landing site have been searching for Onen’s body until when they found it this morning and retrieved it from the lake.

Julius Hakiza, the Albert Region Police Spokesperson, says Marine Police are still searching for the body of the Congolese who drowned with Onen so that it is handed over to Congolese authorities. Attacks by suspected Congolese militiamen against Ugandan fishermen on Lake Albert have been ongoing since 2018.

On December 25, 2019, suspected Congolese militiamen raided Lake Albert and robbed Ugandan fishermen of their valuables. In March 2019, suspected Congolese militiamen staged three attacks near Bugoigo, Walukuba and Butiaba landing sites in Buliisa district where they robbed 30 boat Engines from Uganda fishermen at gunpoint.

On March 1, 2019, three suspected Congolese Militiamen raided Kyehoro landing site in Kikuube district and abducted Pithuwa Opio, a fisherman attached to Kyehoro landing site. They crossed with him to Tchomia Landing site in Bunia district Ituri province in the Eastern part of the DR Congo together with his boat and set of fishing nets.

In November 2018, suspected Congolese Militiamen gunned down five Ugandan fishermen before taking off with their fishing gear. The incident happened near Kaiso landing site in Kabaale Sub County in Hoima district.
