Brief Hailstorm Destroys Gardens, Houses in Mbarara City

Alifunsi Nyamabale, the chairperson LC1 Rwariire 1 says the hailstorm lasted for only thirty minutes from 5:30 to 6:00 PM but left a trail of destruction.
Heavy rains with a hailstorm have destroyed gardens structures in Rwariire 1 village,  Katojo ward Mbarara city leaving over 275 homesteads in need of relief aid.

Alifunsi Nyamabale, the chairperson LC1 Rwariire 1 says the hailstorm lasted for only thirty minutes from 5:30 to 6:00 PM.

He says the hailstorm destroyed gardens of Beans, Cassava, Maize, and banana plantations.

One thousand three hundred people have been affected in his village and in addition,   6 houses and structures for rabbits were damaged.

Agnes Mumbere, an affected resident says she lost one and half acres of Cassava and a  house.

She pleads with government for help.

Jomo Mugabe, the Chairperson of Mbarara City South Division ha appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister to come to the rescue of the affected communities and provide food relief and roofing materials to those whose houses were destroyed.

Geoffrey Rukyamuzi, the environmentalist for ACORD blames all damage by rain to deforestation and poor farming practices.
