Buganda Parliamentary Caucus members say they have started investigating circumstances under which NRM candidate, John Alintuma Nsambu, got more than 10,000 votes in the just concluded Bukoto South parliamentary by-election.

Mathias Nsubuga, the Democratic Party candidate, was declared winner of the Thursday election after beating NRM’s Nsambu and two others.

According to the official results declared by Gracious Aryaija, the Lwengo district returning officer, Nsubuga polled 11,854 votes against Nsambu’s 10,427 votes. Julius Ssentamu of the Forum for Democratic Change—FDC managed fifty nine votes while Independent candidate Dan Katula Mubiru got only four votes.

However, although DP supporters are celebrating Nsubuga victory, the Buganda parliamentary caucus members suspect the former ICT minister to have got the votes through underhand methods.

Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze, who is the deputy caucus chairperson, says they have started recording statements from voters in Bukoto South to find out how Nsambu managed to get all those votes.

Nambooze claims that preliminary findings from dozens of voters from Nkoni, Ngereko, Kinoni and other areas show that Nsambu never got more than 100 votes.

Masaka Municipality MP Mathias Mpuuga claims that the Electoral Commission and police were involved in rigging for Nsambu. He explains that on the election day, they found security agencies rigging for Nsambu. He also claims that the police boss Lt Gen Kale Kayihura and Dr. Badru Kiggundu, the Chairperson Electoral Commission were part of the rigging and intimidation machinery.

This comes just hours after Prof. Elijah Mushemeza, the Chairperson NRM electoral commission told the media in Kampala that the ruling party would challenge Nsubuga’s election in court. Mushemeza also claimed that the elections were marred by violence, smear campaign and several malpractices which he says the party will capitalize upon to challenge the outcome.

But Nsubuga says he is ready to defend his election. He instead claims that they have evidence of Nsambu’s involvement in election malpractices.

Nsambu is yet to comment on the results. But the other candidates, FDC’s Julius Ssentamu and Katula, an Independent, have conceded defeat and congratulated Nsubuga upon his victory.
