Residents of Buganga landing site in Bussi Sub County, Wakiso District have raised concerns about the sanitation crisis in the area. The landing site lacks sanitary facilities and safe water sources.

Unpleasant stench and flies hover around the island as the fishermen turn to bushes to answer nature’s call. According to fishermen, the only toilet on the land site filled up three years ago.

Ibrahim Akubeera, a resident at the landing site said that community members have been easing themselves into the lake waters.  He adds that they stand a high risk of contracting deadly waterborne diseases resulting from poor sanitation and hygiene.

Bussi Sub County chairperson, Mukalazi Charles Ssenkandwa says that the area needs more than 600 toilets to serve the more than 2,000 people.  He appealed to the government and well-wishers to intervene and help to construct for them latrines and safe water sources.

Wakiso LCV Chairperson Matia Lwanga Bwanika attributed the sanitation crisis to a lack of management and care. He however promised to work with the different departments to construct latrines at the landing site. He asked the area leaders to work with the people to identify suitable areas where the latrine would be constructed.

Bwanika said that once the latrine is constructed, area leaders shall establish a management committee to take care of the facility for sustainable and hygiene maintenance.
