Bugiri district health officials have resolved to start importing cow dung from the cattle corridor districts for use in the fight against jiggers that are invading area again.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ workshop organized by World Vision on Tuesday, the Bugiri district health officer, Dr Steven Kiirya said jiggers have been detected in four schools which were affected when the blood sacking insects invaded the district last year.

He named the schools as Buwunga, Magoola, Buluguyi and Mifumi primary schools.

He said the cow dung is to be used to smear inside the class rooms of these schools as a medium solution to controlling the jiggers.

Dr Kiirya said Shs14 million has been set for the purchase of the cow dung.

In October last year, government launched a national campaign to eradicate the blood-sucking insects in Busoga region. It is not clear whether the campaign is still ongoing.
