One person, identified by residents
as Alex Mugasha, was killed last night during protests in Nkumba, Katabi
Town Council. He was shot in the head and chest at about 8pm On
Thursday.
The protestors were demanding for the release of National Unity Platform- NUP's presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi.
Kyagulanyi was arrested on Wednesday in Luuka.
Eye witnesses say Mugasha, a builder in his 30s, was not part of the
protestors but became a victim because he had moved out on
the street to look for what to eat.
The
incident happened as police and military officers tried to disperse
protestors in Kisembi cell in Nkumba after rowdy crowds, mostly residents,
started burning tyres.
Residents alerted police officers this morning after finding Mugasha's lifeless body on the roadside.
The police officers have now taken his body to
Mulago National Specialised Hospital for a postmortem.
Patrick
Onyango, the spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Police, says the police
has scanty information about the incident and details about the
deceased.
He says residents alerted police and officers who went and picked the body,
"When
we (police officers) reached there, the crowd was already charged and
they started pelting our officers with stones," Onyango noted.
He adds, "So they simply picked the body and went away. They didn't gather much information. They only got one name as Alex."
He however says officers will return to the scene and gather more information.
Some
of the residents have expressed their grief while others say Mugasha's
death has given them more zeal to continue pushing for change.
