Shock gripped residents Kyanja village in Kitanda sub-county after a family of two people suffocated to death in their house, and another one admitted in critical condition.

The deceased have been identified as Rose Zawedde, 33, and Rogers Ssembuma, 4.    Ten year old  Abbey Lwanga was rushed to Villa Maria hospital where he is admitted.

According to regional police spokesperson Muhammad Nsubuga, the incident occurred on Monday night but the neighbours only realized after several hours in the morning.

Their neighbours became concerned after knocking on their door and none of the occupants of the house could respond yet the door was locked from inside.

The local authorities who were informed of the tragedy responded by breaking the door to gain access and police were called to the scene.

Zawedde and Ssebuuma were found already died but Lwanga was still breathing.

The bodies were taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.

According to Nsubuga, the police are yet to establish the probable cause of death as investigations into the incident have kicked off.   But he observes that the three occupants left a charcoal stove burning and went to sleep.

Nsubuga reasons that the burning stove consumed the oxygen depriving the occupants, killing two and one survived miraculously.
