Anti-corruption players in Bunyoro want government to strengthen and re-equip anti-corruption organs to enable them effectively fight corruption. The demand comes barely a week to the international anti-corruption Day  marked on December 9.

James Sseruyange, the coordinator Midwestern Region Anti-corruption Coalition-MIRAC says anti-corruption organs like the police, the Inspectorate of Government and courts of law are weak and underfunded.

Sseruyange says the organs are understaffed and the few workers available are poorly paid.

The MIRAC Coordinator observes that because of low pay and ill-facilitation such officials have often been cited in corruption, bribery and misappropriation of funds.

Charles Oringa, the Midwestern Region Criminal Investigations Officer, admits the inefficiencies especially in prosecuting corrupt offenders.

Oringa however blames on the judiciary for delays in prosecuting cases, due to a limited number of magistrates and state attorneys.

Anti-corruption Day will be celebrated under the theme, “taking stock of the achievements of public anti-corruption instititutions in Uganda in the past three years”.

The day is preceded by an anti-corruption week that comprises a number of anti-corruption activities such as drama, dialogue meetings and radio talk shows .The Anti-corruption week runs from December 2nd-9th.

In Bunyoro the celebration has been pushed to December 15 and it will be held in Hoima district.
