The construction of Bunyoro regional construction material testing laboratory is complete. The Laboratory is found behind Hoima municipal administrative offices in Hoima town.

It is meant to help engineers to test the quality of construction materials including soil samples, asphalt, sand, cement, stones, and concrete among others.

Testing is essential to ensure materials used during construction meet all the necessary quality benchmarks and keep the structure in line with engineering requirements.

David Kyasanku, the Hoima Town Clerk told Uganda Radio Network that the laboratory, which cost Shillings 587M was constructed under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development Programme (USMID) batch II.

He says the laboratory will serve Hoima, Masindi, Buliisa, Kiryandongo, Kikuube, Kibaale, Kagadi and Kakumiro districts.

He says this will address the use of substandard construction materials for road and house construction among others that are being erected in the oil rich region.

Kyasanku says the equipment that will be used in the lab arrived in the country a week ago and is being cleared by Uganda Revenue Authority-URA.

He says the equipment to be installed include California Baring Ratio (CBR) for testing the strength of soil and asphalt, Atterberg limits testing Machine that is used for testing soil samples, Dry density in-situ sand replacement machine that is used for testing soil layers and concrete testing equipment.

Mary Grace Mugasa, the Mayor Hoima municipality says many contractors in the region have been trekking long distances  to test their  construction materials in the central material testing laboratory in Kireka in Kampala, which is 120km away from Hoima town.

She explains that this would see contractors give excuses and end up delaying some of the projects. She says the lab will help council earn an extra buck since they will be charging those using it.

She however, notes that they lack relevant personnel to man the laboratory.
