Audio 1

A stand off between Bus operators and the proprietor of Qualicell bus terminal over the sudden increase in loading charges has entered its second day today.

The bus owners who started loading passengers along Allen and Nakivubo roads yesterday, have refused to return to the park, until they sign a contract with Drake Lubega, the proprietor of Qualicell bus terminal.

Bus owners yesterday abandoned, Qualicell bus terminal protesting the arbitrary increase of loading fees from 50,000 to 75,000 shillings.

The bus owners were also enraged that Drake Lubega had introduced fines for repairing buses in the park.

Last evening the Director Kampala Metropolitan police, Andrew Sorowen chaired a meeting between Drake Lubega and the bus owners at Kati Kati bar and restaurant.

The Chairman Allied Bus Owners Association Ssebaana Kizito says that the meeting agreed to increase the loading fees from 50,000 to 60,000 shillings for each bus operating in the park.

The meeting also abolished the fine of 100,000 shillings that was being levied on buses that load past their scheduled time in the park.

Kizito however says that they will not resume operations in Qualicell bus terminal until they sign a contract with Drake Lubega. Buses to Gulu, Lira, Kitgum, Mbarara, Kisoro, Mbale and Soroti operate in the park.
