Bushenyi Designates Stopover Points For Truck Drivers

Ishaka Bushenyi Municipality is a popular stopover for cargo truck drivers heading to Kasese and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bushenyi District COVID-19 task Force has designated two playgrounds as stopover points for long distance truck drivers.

This restrictive measure comes in the wake of an increase in infections among long-distance truck drivers, most of them Kenyan and Tanzanian nationals, crossing through Uganda to South Sudan.

Ishaka Bushenyi Municipality is a popular stopover for cargo truck drivers heading to Kasese and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Jolly Tibamanya, the chairperson of the Task Force said that they have designated Kashenyi playground for trucks heading to Ntungamo through Kagamba and Nyakabirizi playground for the trucks heading to Mbarara- Kasese.

Bushenyi District Health Officer, Dr Edward Mwesigye, warned the public especially women in Ishaka town to keep away from the truck drivers.

Mwesigye says that they are ready to test all truck drivers who will stop and sleep in the designated stopover points.

At least 150 trucks make stopovers in Ishaka Bushenyi Municipality in a month.

On Sunday, four more truck drivers tested positive to COVID-19 rising Uganda‘s confirmed cases to 79. These are ere among the 1,578 truck drivers who were tested on Sunday by the Uganda Virus Research Institute - UVRI.

All the positive cases, according to the Ministry of Health, are Tanzanian truck drivers that arrived into the country through the border at Mutukula.
