Bushenyi Municipal Leaders Criticized for Leasing out Public Land

Apollo Kakonge, the Executive Director of West Ankole Civil Society Forum says that the trend of events, which involves acting with impunity is worrying and spells doom for the municipality. Kakonge says that the incident is one of the several irresponsible actions that have been taken by the municipal authorities in recent months.

Bushenyi Municipal council leaders are on the spot for leasing out public land without clearance from the council.  The land, located in Kajurugo cell, Bushenyi Central Division was leased out to a businessman identified as Gordon Tumwebaze for a period of 10-years, at a cost of 10 million Shillings.    

The move is, however, being challenged by area residents, civil society organizations and councillors who are questioning the procedures followed in leasing out the land.

Kakonge also accuses politicians of conniving with technocrats to cheat innocent locals and messing up the lands sector across their jurisdictions.

Gordon Tumwebaze the businessman currently occupying the land says that he used legal procedures to secure the land but he could not avail any documents to back his argument. 

Bushenyi Municipality Mayor Jackson Kamugasha allays fears that the municipal authorities disregarded known procedures in giving out the land. He, however, says that the municipality is willing to address any irregularities that may be pointed out in relation to the transaction.
