Bushenyi Youth Embrace Free Circumcision

Health centers in Bushenyi offering free medical circumcision have been overwhelmed by the number of youths seeking to be circumcised. They are Mashonga, Bushenyi and Kyabugyimbi health centers. Bushenyi district health department launched free medical circumcision as one of the ways to reduce HIV infection in the district.

 

The HIV/Aids prevalence rate in Bushenyi district now stands at 10 percent above the national average of 6.4 percent. Dr. Edward Mwesigye, the senior Medical Officer Bushenyi district says that more than 700 youths have undergone the medical circumcision since the exercise was launched three months ago.

 

He says that the 98 percent of the people operated upon are youths. Ronald Kangwagye, a vendor in Ishaka town council is one of the hundreds of the youths have undergone the circumcision. Kangwangye says that he was introduced to the circumcision process by another vendor Alex Alituha. He says that he embraced the free medical circumcision after his friend sensitized him on its benefits. 

Dr. Steven Karamuzi, from Reproductive Health Uganda carries medical circumcision in his private clinic at shillings 5000. Karamuzi explains that research shows that medical circumcision reduces the chances of infection by over 60 percent. However, it does not offer full protection against HIV Infection. While several youths have embraced circumcision others like Mike Rumanzi and Amos Ategeka have shied away.

Rumanzi says on top of fearing the danger of circumcision his guardian is opposed to it. Rumanzi says his uncle a canon in the church of Uganda warned all his children against going for circumcision saying in contravenes Christian norms and belief.
