Busia Woman in Trouble over Child Neglect

Her arrest comes after the neighbors got concerned about her locking the minors in the house leaving them without food, and on Sunday reported the matter to the village chairman who intervened and broke the house door to release the children.

Police in Busia district have arrested a woman who has been locking her children in the house for last one month in order to go and look for money.

The suspect has been identified as Eunice Nabugolo, 23 years, a resident of Solo A village in Western division of Busia Municipality. She is accused of routinely locking in the house her own two children - a girl of nine- 9 months and two-2 years old boy.

Her arrest comes after the neighbors got concerned about her locking the minors in the house leaving them without food, and on Sunday reported the matter to the  village chairman who intervened and broke the house door to release the children.

While at police, Eunice Nabugolo confessed to the crime saying that she usually locks the children in the house to enable her get freedom to go and find ways of survival since she separated with the husband last year. She pleaded in vain with police to release her to go and take care of the minors.

Mangeni Wacha, the L.C.1 chairman says that they found the two minors malnourished, lhungry and crying in the locked house. He claimed such acts are becoming common among women in the village, and appealed to the authorities and development partners to come and sensitize the community against the acts of child abuse.

One of the suspect’s neighbors, Timothy Obindo, says that the lady usually buys four sweat banana fingers that the two share as lunch and sometimes as supper as well. The decision to report the matter to the authorities was after the continuous mistreatment of the minors by the woman which has lasted for one month.

ASP. Robert Harry Piriyo, the O.C Busia central police station says that the suspect will be charged with child neglect and other cases that shall be put on her due to the unlawful acts to mistreat the innocent children.

The suspect was still in police custody at Busia central police station by the time of filing this story and the minors were handed to the village chairman as police carries out investigations in the matter.
