With just minutes left to the opening of the polls for the Butambala MP by elections, both the NRM and DP say they are confident of victory. Godfrey Kiwanda, the Mityana North MP says despite the fact that NRM has been losing all the previous by elections in Buganda, they are confident they will win Butambala. NRM lost the Butambala South, Entebbe Municipality and Luweero District Woman MP by- elections to Democratic Party.

Speaking to URN last evening at the office of the District Internal Security Officer, Kiwanda said they are confident of victory because unlike the previous elections their mobilization team has been united. He said that since the campaigns started President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM chairperson has been engaging their party candidates and all warring parties to ensure harmony.

Kiwanda stresses that the strength of the NRM has been exhibited through the collaboration among NRM bigwigs in the area including Hajji Nadduli, Nakabbale Patrick, Fred Mwesigye,Mariam Nalubega the woman Member of Parliament Butambala and Kikulukunyu.

He adds that they have placed parish, Sub County and parish coordinators to ensure voters elect NRM not through rigging but clean voting. The NRM has also deployed other NRM MP’s in different areas to guard their vote.

Kiwanda says with leadership of Hajji Moses Kigongo in the area, they are confident he has done a great job that warrants a win for NRM. Meanwhile, URN found Democratic Party’s candidate Muwanga Kivumbi at his home standing next to women stirring large saucepans of food.

The seemingly exhausted Kivumbi said that he has been humbled by the support shown to him by residents during the campaigns. He said it will take an extra ordinary effort by the NRM to turn the tide. He believes the Electoral commission will stay impartial, despite working under pressure and strain.

He claims that most of the polling agents are NRM but the opposition shall supervise adequately and guard their votes too. Kivumbi says he has enough machinery on the ground to deal with challenges that he says the opposition has been dealing with during most of the by elections.

Kivumbi confidently says he has a good track record compared to NRM’s Kikulukunyu and the party itself. He says all these are factors that have worked and shall work against the NRM in today’s polls coupled with its failure to improve the road network, dilapidated Gombe hospital, undermining Muslims in the area and failure to address Buganda’s concerns.
