Buvuma district council has rejected an unprecedented move by the LC V Chairperson to take over the position of District Service Commission Chairperson.

The LC V Chairperson, Alex Mabiriizi had forwarded his name and that of Beatrice Keyijesha, the Lwajje Sub-county LC V councillor for appointment to the District Service Commission. However, councilors have rejected the move, saying they can only approve the two if they resign from their current positions.

According to the local government act, a person qualifies to be a member of the District Service Commission on the basis of high moral character and integrity, working experience of not less than ten years in a responsible position and must be ordinary in the district.

The act forbids public officer hold from appointment as District Service Commission members. Ronald Wanda, Buvuma District LC Vice-Chairperson, says they will approve the Commission once the anomaly is resolved.

Sarasino Namuyimba Ssekajjolo, the speaker Buvuma district, says he will convene another council session to constitute a new commission.

Simon Ddumba, a resident at Buvuma district says it would be a selfish move to approve the LC V chairperson as District Service Commission chairperson before resigning from his current office.

“It is an act of office misuse, sometimes our people need to be appreciative. The people of Buvuma chose him into power and once he has decided to step down it is also better to give opportunities to other people. Buvuma has several reputable people befitting that position,” he said.

However, Mabiriizi notes that his name was recommended by the district executive after realizing that he has stopped participating in active politics.

"I am not standing again for any political position where I have served for over 15 years first as a councillor before Buvuma was even created and then as district chairperson. If the executive members wished that I should serve further in any other position it is the council to approve or reject the decision,” Mabiriizi said.
