Steven Lukoma the District Councillor representing Lyabaana Sub
County, Buvuma District has been shot dead. He was killed by a Uganda People’s Defence
Soldier-UPDF attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit-FPU.
It is alleged that one of the unidentified officers accidentally pulled the
trigger firing at Lukoma whom they had travelled with on the fisheries protection
speed vessel for an operation on Wednesday night.
According to Zebio Wasswa, the Buvuma District Public Relations
Officer, Lukoma has been the head of the District Committee fighting
illegal fishing and has been working closely with the FPU in operations against
illegal fishing activities.
Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson has
confirmed the incident saying police is still at the scene investigating circumstances
under which Lukoma was shot.
Mathias Ssemanda, one of the deceased’s son says that they received
the news of the death of his father at around 5 am from residents of Buvuma.
