Buyende, Kamuli Hailstorm Death Toll Rises to 18

According to police reports, 13 people died in Kidera Sub County, Buyende district and five people perished in the sub-counties of Balawuli and Namasagali in Kamuli district.

The death toll from Monday’s hailstorm in Buyende and Kamuli districts has risen to 18.  

According to police reports, 13 people died in Kidera Sub County, Buyende district and five people perished in the sub-counties of Balawuli and Namasagali in Kamuli district.

Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North Police Region Spokesperson says that the victims succumbed to suffocation after the walls of theor houses collapsed on them.  

Kasadha says that police have conducted a 12-hour search and headcount of residents in the affected villages to ensure that all residents are accounted for.

“We have finalized our search in all affected areas and we have confirmed that no new death has been registered,” Kasadha says.  

He adds that 91 victims from both districts suffered minor injuries and are receiving treatment at Kidera Health Center IV whereas nine sustained serious injuries and have been tto Jinja Regional Referral Hospital.

Kasadha further says that police has embarked on with efforts to offer psychological support to the victim’s families and also sensitize the locals on disaster management.
