The stakes are higher this time round as Uganda Cranes hosts seven time African champions Egypt in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole this afternoon.

Forget the 2017 Afcon qualification for Uganda after 39 years of waiting, the Cranes need maximum points against the Pharaohs today to brighten their chances of booking a ticket to Russia for the World Cup.

Egypt lead the Group with six points, while Uganda are second with four points. Assistant Vice captain Hassan Wasswa Mawanda told URN on Wednesday that they have the belief the team can beat Egypt. “We are hungry for a win here because the same team beat us 1-0 in the 2017 Afcon in Gabon,” added the senior player.

But looking on paper it will not be an easy task for Uganda Cranes to unlock the gifted Egyptians who will be led by in-form Mohamed Salah who netted one of the goals in Liverpool's 4-0 win over Arsenal in an English Premiership game on Sunday.

The Cranes attack has proved over time that they are not a high scoring side, while the Egyptians with majority being in good form since the season started with most of their respective clubs have what it takes to break any defence in the continent.

The organisational abilities of the defenders and defensive midfield will also be key for Uganda Cranes to counter the likes England based duo of Mohamed ElNeny and Ramadan Sobhi who are expected to be in the heart of the midfield.

Egypt's coach Hector Cuper also made it clear he believes in his players to get a win in Uganda. “The two games against Uganda in Kampala and next week in Alexandria are the major games for us now to make our passage to the World Cup easier,” reasoned Cuper.

But Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Onyango told URN that this game is like a Cup final and Ugandan should come and cheer the team. “We have to give in our best against Egypt because this game determines so much on our chances of qualifying for the World Cup. We need to utilize the home advantage to acquire maximum points  before the return leg,” added the reigning African player of the year.

Cue out:..support their country.”//

The Cranes technical bench led by interim coach Moses Basena will have the difficult task of picking a front line that is capable of doing the magic. He will pick from Geoffrey Sserunkuma, Emmanuel Okwi, Milton Karisa, Farouk Miya and Derrick Nsibambi.
