Uganda's National Under 18 Head Coach, Morley Byekwaso says that his team will bounce back in the CECAFA U-18 Boys Championships after a defeat to Tanzania in the opening match.

Currently, Uganda is tied at the bottom of Group B with South Sudan after defeats against Tanzania and Zanzibar, respectively. Zanzibar secured a 1-0 victory over South Sudan in the previous match, placing them jointly at the top of Group B alongside Tanzania.

The team lost 1-0 to Tanzania, with William Sharif scoring the decisive goal fifteen minutes into the match that was played at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.

With only the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, Byekwaso called for a flawless performance in the upcoming group games.

According to the schedule, Uganda is set to face Zanzibar on Wednesday.

Despite having the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers standout player, Travis Mutyaba, Byekwaso chose to keep him on the bench initially, bringing him in later in the game.

However, Mutyaba's contribution had minimal impact on altering the outcome of the game.

Byekwaso said although they fought to rectify their performance in the second half, they were stopped because of the wet pitch. He however assured that the team would analyze their mistakes and aim for an improved performance in the upcoming fixture.

Byekwaso also noted that the players he is guiding are accustomed to handling pressure due to their participation in school competitions. He said that the team would maintain their playing style while remaining focused.  "These players are used to such pressure, they have been coming into their clubs as young players, we shall do our best as coaches to show them what our mission is.”
