Uganda's Juliet Chekwel and Abdallah Mande will take part in the 10km IAAF Silver Label Okpekpe Road race due May 12th in Edo State, Nigeria.

Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) confirmed to URN on Tuesday that the two athletes have been training ahead of the event. “This event is good because it will help our athletes improve on speed,” explained Otuchet.

The Federation President said that since there are several events lined up this season including the African Seniors Championship where an African team will be selected to participate in the Athletics World Cup, athletes have to work really hard.

Chekwel who finished 4th in the 5,000m final at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia told URN that she is determined to improve her speed and this will only come with participating in several road races. “ I felt bad missing out on winning a medal in Australia, but I will not give up,” she added.

Timothy Masaba, the UAF administrator said Chekwel opted to take part in the Nigeria event after failing to enter the 2018 IAAF Shanghai Diamond League slated for May 12th in China.

Gold medalist in the U-20 race of the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championship Jacob Kiplimo together with Joel Ayeko, Stephen Kissa and Peruth Chemutai will take part in the IAAF Shanghai Diamond League.
