Star athlete Joshua Cheptegei will take part in two 2018 Athletix Grand Prix Series in South Africa in March.

The organisers Athletics South Africa (ASA) said in a communication that the Ugandan is the first top runner to enter the event. He will run at the Ruimsig Stadium in Johannesburg on March 1 and the second one at the Tuks Stadium, Tshawane seven days later.

“ The Athletix Grand Prix Series consists of three meetings and Cheptegei will run in the first two. But whether he will run a 1500m or 3000m is still being decided. Either distance will suit the man who is hailed to take over from Mo Farah as the best middle distance athlete,” said the communication.

Cheptegei, a World 10,000m silver medalist is expected to compete against South Africa's finest middle distance athletes including Jerry Motsau.

“ I am running the 5000m at the Commonwealth Games in April and this Series is the perfect opportunity for me to fine tune for the competition,” said Cheptegei. Another Ugandan runner and Cheptegei's training partner Abel Sikowo will also take part in the events.

Cheptegei won the inaugural FNB Durban 10k Citysurfrun in October last year when he ran the fourth fastest time in the world for 10km.
